Text is split on whitespace, and any resulting chunk containing at least one letter or digit counts as a word. Hyphenated compounds such as "state-of-the-art" count as one word, matching the behaviour of Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
The "with spaces" figure counts every character including spaces, tabs and line breaks. The "without spaces" figure excludes all whitespace. Academic and publishing guidelines usually specify which one they mean, so both are shown.
Reading time uses 225 words per minute, the accepted average for silent reading of general prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are estimates — technical material reads more slowly.
Keyword density is how often a term appears as a share of total words. For SEO, a natural range for a primary keyword is roughly 0.5% to 2%. Anything higher risks reading as keyword stuffing, which search engines actively discourage.

No. There are no server calls and no analytics on what you type. All counting happens in JavaScript inside your own tab. The only thing that persists is an auto-saved draft kept in your browser's local storage on this device, so a reload does not lose your work — it is never transmitted, and pressing Clear deletes it.
It is the Flesch Reading Ease formula, which combines average sentence length with average syllables per word to give a 0–100 score: 90+ is very easy, 60–69 is plain English, and below 30 reads at a university-graduate level. The grade level beside it is Flesch-Kincaid, which expresses the same idea as a US school year. Both need at least ten words and one full sentence to be meaningful.
The formula rewards two things: shorter sentences and shorter words. Splitting a long sentence in two usually moves the score more than any word swap. Replacing multi-syllable words with everyday ones ("use" for "utilise") does the rest. Most web writing aims for 60–70, which is roughly an 8th to 9th-grade level.
Real search queries are usually phrases, not single words. Seeing that "content marketing" appears eight times tells you far more about what a page is about than counting "content" and "marketing" separately. Phrases that appear only once are hidden, because a single occurrence is not a pattern.
Stop words are the structural filler of English — "the", "is", "of", "and". They are always the most frequent words in any text, so leaving them in buries the terms you actually care about. With the filter on, single stop words are hidden, and phrases are dropped only when they start or end with one, which keeps genuine phrases like "machine learning" intact.
Languages such as Chinese and Japanese do not separate words with spaces, so the word count will be inaccurate for them. The character count remains correct and is the more meaningful measure for those scripts.
